Myths vs. Facts on Immigration

Arkansas Watch just posted a response to a White House article defending illegal immigration.

The White House posted an article on line entitled Myth/Fact: Ten Key Myths About the Border Security and Immigration Reform Agreement at this link. The Heritage Foundation countered that article with Facts that bust the White House points at this link. A Rasmussen poll shows tht only "26% of American voters favor passage of the legislation. See this link.Following are some of the facts vs the myths.

1. MYTH: This is not amnesty. FACT: The bill takes an approach similar to that of the 1986 immigration law. President Reagan backed that law... and called it amnesty. So does Black's Law Dictionary, which says, 'the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act provided amnesty for undocumented aliens already in the country.'"

George Soros Number

This is from freerepublic.com. I haven't tried it but I should be able to use this Monday!
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1840011/posts

If you are having trouble getting through the Capitol switchboard to express your opinion about the Bush-Kennedy shamnesty, there's a special hotline number you might like to try.
1-800-882-2005. (Spanish number) or 1-800-417-7666. (English number)

Freepers picked up on it this morning. Bryan Preston dialed it earlier today and captured audio of the hotline. He reports:
The hotline is paid for by something called the Coalition for Comprehensive Immigration Reform and it’s being blasted to pro-open borders groups all over the country. The hotline gives its callers access to their senators that average Joes don’t have. Here's what the "Coalition for Comprehensive Immigration Reform" is directing its pro-illegal alien activists to do:
Call between 9:00am and 5:00pm Eastern time to have a better chance of connecting with the Senate offices.

When you call, you will hear a recording
1) The system will scan your phone number (or ask you to enter it) to verify your Senators.
2) The system will ask which Senator you would like to be connected to.
3) Before connecting, you will hear a brief message about immigration reform to deliver.
4) After the message, you will be connected to your Senator.
5) After you are done, be sure to call again and connect to your other Senator's office.
Now, you can use it, too:
Operators are standing by...
***
Who is the "Coalition for Comprehensive Immigration Reform?" An umbrella group for every major pro-open borders outfit--many of which receive generous taxpayer subsidies. From a March 2007 press release: A coalition of local immigrant advocates, national policy groups, labor unions, faith-based groups, and ethnic organizations have come together under the umbrella of the Coalition for Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CCIR) to mount an unprecedented nationwide campaign to support passage of workable comprehensive immigration reform legislation in Congress this year.
"This campaign is unprecedented in the pro-immigration community," said Cecilia Munoz, Senior Vice President of the National Council of La Raza. "Never before have we brought together under one banner such a formidable political coalition to fight for passage of comprehensive immigration reform. We now have the money, the people and the political will to punch this vital issue over the goal line in Congress and make America a better place to live and work."
The campaign already has approximately $4 million on hand, and is expanding its war chest for what many believe will be a defining legislative debate in Congress this year. The campaign is anchored in the work of leading local and national groups committed to comprehensive immigration reform that will work and that will pass. It will feature a strong central staff headquartered in Washington, DC supported by a bi-partisan team of lobbyists, communications specialists and a field operation in 30 key states.
CCIR launched its effort over the weekend in Washington by bringing together field organizers from 29 states to hammer out strategy and refine legislative targets. In addition, the campaigns Strategy Council met to consider legislative strategy and policy priorities. The members of the Strategy Council are: ACORN, Asian American Justice Center, Center for American Progress, Center for Community Change, Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA), Catholic Legal Immigration Network (CLINIC), Denver Area Labor Federation, El Centro, Inc., El Pueblo, Hate Free Zone, Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, Irish Lobby for Immigration Reform, LA County Federation of Labor, Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, LULAC, Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition, MALDEF, NAACP, NAKASEC, NALACC, National Capital Immigrant Coalition, National Council of La Raza, National Immigration Forum, National Immigration Law Center, Nebraska Appleseed, New York Immigration Coalition, PCUN/CAUSA, SEIU, SEIU 32BJ, SEIU Florida Healthcare Union, Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition, U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, UNITE HERE, UNITE HERE Local 226 Las Vegas, UNITE HERE New Jersey State Council, United Farm Workers, United Methodist Church - General Board of Church and Society. The CCIR Board is comprised of Munoz, (Chair); Frank Sharry, National Immigration Forum; Deepak Bhargava, Center for Community Change; Chung Wha Hong, New York Immigration Coalition; Eliseo Medina, SEIU; and Tom Snyder, UNITE HERE.
Where did that $4 million come from? From something called "The Atlantic Philanthropies:"
Atlantic has made three grants to date in support of this effort: a planning grant in the amount of $100,000, and two core support grants, one in 2004 which was renewed in 2005, totaling $7m.The initial planning grant enabled these twelve advocate groups – from labor, community development, ethnic identified groups, national immigration advocacy, and regional immigration coalitions – to come together at a common table and set a coordinated agenda and strategy. The two core support grants enacted this strategy – through advocacy, lobbying, communications, message and media development, grassroots mobilization and education efforts. To widen the reach and coordination of this “inside/outside” strategy, a sister 501(c)(3) coalition, The New American Opportunity Campaign, was created by the CCIR. Grant Data
* Project: Immigrant Rights * Programme: Reconciliation & Human Rights * Region Served: United States * Grantee: Coalition for Comprehensive Immigration Reform * Amount Awarded: $4,000,000 * Year Awarded: 2005 * Duration: 24 Months (31 Aug 2005 to 29 Aug 2007)
And yes, this philanthropic group has ties to open-borders billionaire George Soros:
Gara LaMarche is President and CEO of The Atlantic Philanthropies. He joined Atlantic in April 2007 to lead the organisation through its final chapter as the foundation disburses its remaining $4 billion endowment and completes active grantmaking by 2016.
Before joining Atlantic, LaMarche served as Vice President and Director of U.S. Programs for the Open Society Institute (OSI), a foundation established by philanthropist George Soros. LaMarche joined OSI in 1996 to launch its U.S. Programs, which focuses on challenges to social justice and democracy.

ICE Raid in Arkansas

BY MICHELLE BRADFORD
Posted on Thursday, May 24, 2007
http://www.nwanews.com/adg/News/191023/

Federal immigration agents arrested 21 illegal aliens Monday during a raid on a Northwest Arkansas Mexican restaurant chain, the U. S. attorney for the Western District of Arkansas announced Wednesday. The raid on Taqueria Michoacan restaurants in Springdale, Rogers and Lowell were conducted as Operation El Rancho Tejocote, prosecutor Bob Balfe said in a news release. Agents from U. S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement and local police served four search warrants, the release stated. Among those arrested were Honorato Pedroza and Gema Rivera, who were identified as “restaurant principals.”

Pedroza is accused of operating an “unlicensed money transmitting business,” according to a complaint filed in U. S. District Court in Fayetteville. Rivera is accused of using fake identification documents to get a job at a Springdale motel. Pedroza and Rivera appeared Wednesday before a federal magistrate judge in Fort Smith and were jailed there. Temple Black, spokesman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s regional office in New Orleans, said the 19 others who were arrested are being held in Northwest Arkansas jails. He couldn’t immediately provide names or details of the 19, but said immigration agents are checking to see if they have outstanding warrants before proceeding with deportation efforts.

There have been two known raids in the region this week. On Tuesday, immigration agents arrested more than 100 illegal aliens working at a George’s poultry processing plant in Butterfield, Mo., north of the Arkansas state line in Barry County, Mo. Rogers Mayor Steve Womack (good guy!) said city officials cooperated with immigration agents during the raids.

“Personally, I think this is a product of a failed immigration policy on the part of the United States government, and we’re working to correct that,” he said. Womack declined to provide details on the raids. Both Rogers and Springdale have applied to a federal program that trains local police to enforce federal immigration laws. Agents began investigating Pedroza in July 2006 and learned he’d opened a checking account at Arvest Bank using a phony Arkansas identification number (provided by the Arkansas Mexican Consulate?), according to a court document.

Bank records showed Pedroza was routinely making large cash deposits and that the money was being transferred to Mexico, the complaint states. Pedroza was transferring money through Sigue Corp., which the complaint describes as a “money service business” licensed by the U. S. Department of the Treasury. Sigue conducts money transfers to Latin America, and in particular to Mexico, according to the corporation’s Web site. It operates in 48 states and says that it “supports the Hispanic community’s growing money transfer needs.” A call to the company wasn’t immediately returned Wednesday.

The complaint states that between March 9 and Oct. 13, 2006, $ 295, 000 was illegally transferred from Pedroza’s account through Sigue to residents of Mexico. Officials at Sigue told immigration agents that Pedroza had authorized the corporation to debit his account for Jose Salud Rivera, who is the registered agent of Taqueria Michoacan restaurants in Northwest Arkansas. Pedroza is not licensed by the Treasury Department to operate a money service business, and he’s not authorized to transfer money outside of the country, the complaint states.

Records show money deposited by Pedroza was transferred to Mexico. One of the recipients was Salud Rivera, who was authorized by Sigue to act as its sole registered agent for Taqueria Michoacan.
About $ 120, 000 was transferred to an address associated with Salud Rivera between March and September 2006. Salud Rivera was convicted in 2003 in U. S. District Court in the Western District of Arkansas, according to the complaint. It’s not clear the crime of which he was convicted. He was deported on Dec. 8, 2003. Gema Rivera, whose relationship to Salud Rivera wasn’t clear Wednesday, is accused of providing phony identification documents to work at the Residence Inn by Marriott in Springdale, according to a complaint in her case. She used a Social Security number that belongs to a 22-year-old woman, and she used an alien registration number that is assigned to yet another woman, the complaint states.

By MARCUS KABEL
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) - Federal immigration agents raided a poultry plant Tuesday morning and arrested more than 100 workers who are believed to be illegal immigrants. Most of those arrested at the George's processing plant in rural Butterfield were from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, said Pete Baird, an agent in charge of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement investigations office in Kansas City. The arrests were part of a probe into identity theft and false documents, including stolen Social Security numbers, allegedly used by illegal immigrants, Baird said. Three people pleaded guilty this year to Social Security fraud as part of the same investigation, and one person has been indicted, Baird said.

The arrested workers are being taken to detention facilities in Kansas City, St. Louis and Wichita, Kan. "These work site enforcement actions help reduce the job magnet that encourages aliens to enter the country illegally," Baird said. Several workers were released because they are the sole caregiver of a child, Baird said. They will be required to appear later for a court hearing, he said.

George's is a regional poultry processing company based in northwest Arkansas. Several hundred people worked at the Butterfield plant in southwest Missouri, authorities said. The plant manager's office referred reporters to corporate headquarters in Rogers, Arkansas for comment. A spokesman at George's Incorporated could not immediately be reached for comment. ICE spokesman Tim Counts said no charges have been filed against George's and declined to say whether the company knew it was hiring illegal aliens.

Federal agents have conducted several mass arrests since the April 2006 raids at pallet-maker IFCO Systems at 40 sites nationwide. There have also been large raids at meatpacker Swift & Co., poultry plant Crider Inc. and leather factory Michael Bianco Inc. Nearly 3,000 suspected illegal workers have been arrested in dozens of states in all. There are an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. Social service advocates said the March arrests at the Michael Bianco factory in New Bedford, Mass. created a humanitarian crisis, with some children left with no one to care for them. (just like the children of tax evaders, con artist, and other criminals)

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Senate on Tuesday defeated a measure that would have eliminated a guest worker program from the bipartisan immigration legislation announced last week. The amendment, introduced by North Dakota Democratic Sen. Byron Dorgan, was rejected with a 64-31 vote. Many political experts, such as Rush Limbaugh believe that the Guest Worker Removal Amendment was known to have no chance of passing and was just for show. Even with the removal of a Guest Worker Program, S1348 would still put millions of illegals on the path to citizenship. Sen. Dorgan will be on the Lou Dobbs show tonight to talk about what this defeat could mean for American working men and women. Sen. Jeff Sessions will also be on the Lou Dobbs show.

Senate scraps Memorial Day deadline (CNN)
After saying they wanted to act on the bill before the Memorial Day holiday, Senate leaders set aside two weeks for debate, with a weeklong break for Memorial Day in between.
Some lawmakers complained they have not yet finished reading the bill, which was distributed over the weekend.
"Why are we in the midst of this rush to judgment, this rush to pass this bill?" asked Sen. David Vitter, R-Louisiana. "I believe there's a very simple political answer, and it is that if the American people fully understood what is buried in this bill, there would be a massive outcry against it."

Vitter complained that the legislation was coming to the floor without review by Senate committees or an analysis of its financial impact by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. And Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Alabama, said the bill "needs some time to be disinfected by the light of day."

Illegal Immigration Bill being debated now!

The “Secure Borders, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Reform Act of 2007” is being debated in the US Senate right now! (S. 1348). We know that the democrats will allow the path to citizenship parts of the bill to go through while denying funding to the enforcement portions, just like in 1986. Please contact the Arkansas Senators and tell them to oppose this 86 amnesty renamed.

Senate Amnesty and organizing Northwest Arkansas

The Morning News, along with TV station KHOG 40/29 recently held an immigration forum which was 30 minutes long and was invitation only. The people of NW Arkansas have elected leaders who are opposed to illegal immigration and want immigration reform. In light of the many events occuring regarding immigration, KeepArkansasLegal is looking to organize immigration reform activist in Northwest Arkansas. We will begin contacting people there about when/where to meet in the area and would like any input you can provide.
_______________________________

The US Senate recently made a backdoor deal with The White House concerning illegal immigration. The plan is similar to the "Comprehensive Immigration Reform " plans that failed to pass last Congressional Session. This watered down amnesty will be protrayed by the leftist media as a good thing for the US on both a national and local level.

An example of pro-illegal alien reporting include a recent special report by The Morning News titled Immigration: Perception v. Reality. As the title suggest, The Morning News mixed legal immigration with illegal immigrants which put illegals in a better light and made opponents of illegal immigration look xenophobic.
http://www.nwaonline.net/projects/immigration/

One of their facts claims that illegals don't obtain social services by stating, "Most social services require proof of citizenship to obtain, but children born in the country to illegal immigrants are citizens and qualify."

First of all, if this were true, nobody would have had a problem with the Arkansas bill that required proof of citizenship to obtain welfare (SB206). The study also complety ignores ID theft and welfare fraud. The Morning News didn't provide any financial estimates, so here are some of the FAIR estimates that didn't make the report:

http://www.fairus.org/site/PageServer?pagename=research_research9e51

-Congress in 2003 enacted an appropriation of $250 million per year (for 4 years) to help offset medical costs of illegal aliens. This amount has been allocated among the states based upon estimates of the illegal alien population and data on the apprehension of illegal aliens in each state. This amount compensates only a fraction of the medical outlays. For Arkansas, the proposed payment in fiscal year 2004 was $643,867.

-FAIR estimated based on 2004 data that educational expenditures for illegal immigration were costing the Arkansas taxpayer $89.5 million dollars annually. This cost was partially for educating students who were themselves illegally in the country ($37.3 million) and in part for the education of their siblings born in the United States to illegal residents ($52.2 million).

-In 2006 we estimated that Arkansas taxpayers are currently burdened with annual costs of about $117 million because of illegal aliens residing in the state. That estimate was based on only expenditures for education, emergency medical care and incarceration. We projected that those costs will rise unless we gain control over our borders and our worksites. If a new amnesty and increases in immigrants and guest workers were enacted, as proposed by business and ethnic advocacy groups, we project that the cost to the state’s taxpayers for those same programs would rise to $202 million per year in 2010 and to $356 million per year in 2020.

Another "fact" from The Morning News claims that, "Immigrants, illegal or otherwise, pay most taxes. Competing studies —one specific to Arkansas and others based on states with larger illegal immigrant populations —give conflicting conclusions on whether the taxes pay for the government services."

The evidence for this is based on studies done by The Urban Institute working with the Rockefeller Foundation, both leftist organizations. The Rockefeller Foundation concluded immigrants and their U.S.-born children contributed $19 million more to Arkansas’ state budget than their costs for services, including costs of education, health services and corrections.

However, the institute did not break down its findings based on legal status and assumed that no one else will perform the jobs illegals are doing. The study also forgot about how much the Federal Government was paying for illegals in Arkansas, the cost of narcotics due to illegal immigration, welfare and ID fraud, and the fact that most illegals are able to get tax rebates by claiming dependents.

ICE Arrests 12 Illegal Aliens (On Army National Guard Base)

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Release:
LITTLE ROCK, Ark.– Special agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) today [Thursday] arrested nine males, two females and one juvenile male, all illegal aliens, employed by two different companies performing contract work at Camp Joseph T. Robinson Army National Guard Base. One of the companies who hired the workers was identified as El Nopal, a dining facility contractor. The other company, contracted to do landscape work, was not immediately identified. All of those arrested are Mexican nationals. All have been placed in removal proceedings for being in violation of U.S. immigration laws. Their immigration status makes it illegal for them to work in the United States. At this time, none of those arrested have been identified as having worked at the base in the past.

KeepArkansasLegal, an immigration reform group based in central Arkansas , commends the Army National Guard personnel, the Arkansas Police Department, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement for taking part in the May 10th arresting of 12 illegal aliens working at Camp Joseph T. Robinson Army National Guard Base. We are glad that the 12 citizens of Mexico will be returned to the country that neglected them and that there were no terrorist activities that occurred. Since illegal aliens are only 4.4% of the US workforce, we know that Camp Robinson will be able to find assistance from the overwhelming majority of companies that uses legal workers.

This incident should be yet another wakeup call for the Federal, State and Local governments to stop pandering to the illegal alien agenda and fix our immigration system. We do not need the next Fort Dix terror plot, or the next drunk driving fatality involving an illegal alien, or the next 9/11 in the State of Arkansas . Letting a few greedy companies get cheap labor and allowing corrupt regimes to exploit their people is not as important as the safety of the Arkansas Taxpayer. Arkansas , Along with the rest of The United States of America, needs to follow the actions of the State of Georgia , which is starting to remove its illegal alien population by attrition and enforcement.

Six Good Reasons to Revisit Immigration Policy

While leftist are claiming it is Christian to allow illegal aliens to become citizens, at least 1 evangelical group is standing up to illegal immigration.

http://www.frc.org/get.cfm?i=WA07E18#WA07E18
To: Friends of Family Research Council
From: Family Research Council President Tony Perkins May 9, 2007 - Wednesday

After arresting six radical Muslims with plans to massacre soldiers at Fort Dix in New Jersey, FBI special agent J.P Weiss said it best when he told reporters, "We dodged a bullet. In fact... we may have dodged several bullets." Unfortunately, what few seem to realize is that without serious immigration reform, Americans may not be quite so blessed next time. Of those accused in the Fort Dix terror plot, three are in the United States illegally. While we applaud the government for intercepting these men, the reality is that at least half of them should have been intercepted much sooner through our regular system of safeguards. Will it take another massive loss of innocent human life before Congress wakes up and recognizes the threat posed by our porous policies? As the House and Senate prioritize their issues for the coming month, this near-tragedy should put illegal immigration on the forefront of everyone's minds. We must confront radical Islam head-on, rather than pretending that it doesn't have an agenda. All too often Americans seem more fearful of offending people than they are of a devastating terrorist attack. Join us in urging Congress to promote true immigration reform that puts national security--not political correctness--first.

The Illegal Alien Ten Commandments (To leftist claiming amnesty/guest worker plans are Christian)

(I saw a press conference about this from the Lou Dobbs show last night and found out about this movement looking at stories on the web)

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/1830255/posts?page=1
Posted on 05/08/2007 10:40:48 AM PDT by pulaskibush
Many of those advocating an amnesty/guest worker program have decided to claim that Christianity on their side. A handful of leftist church leaders are preparing to grant sanctuary to illegal immigrants facing deportation in an effort to unite evangelicals behind comprehensive immigration reform. Jim Wallis of Sojourners called upon Christians to lobby for "compassionate" comprehensive immigration reform that treats illegal immigrants with grace. More about that story here:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1800163/posts
What Jim Wallis and other "leftist Christians" fail to realize is that illegal aliens are the neglected citizens of other countries forced by poverty to leave their families and homelands. These neglected citizens are then transported by abusive human smugglers just to be exploited by companies like Swiftco. The cost and risk of illegal immigration is then put upon the American Taxpayer. This is the "compassion" that pro-illegals show.
The attempt to defend an evil practice with Christianity is not a new scam. American Slavery was seen as a way to “convert” Africans into Christians. If Jim Wallis has no problem encouraging human smuggling for cheap labor from Mexico, how can he object to human smuggling for even cheaper labor from an African country such as Sudan? Jesus did help the poor, but he also publicly criticized the corrupt government officials who caused poverty. Today's leftist Christian appears to give corrupt regimes a pass. With this twist in Christianity, the rules have to be “altered” to fit this agenda. Therefore, here are the new rules for the Pro-illegal Alien Agenda.

I. Thou shalt allow multi-million dollar corporations who exploit illegals to cheat the tax code and put the burden of the expenses of illegals on the American taxpaying worker.

II. Thou shalt ally with organizations that promote socialism, a form of government that has persecuted millions of Christians worldwide.

III. Thou shalt claim that illegals are the needed by the economy even though they are less than 5 percent of the workforce.

IV. Thou shalt accuse anyone who criticizes illegal immigration of being racist, xenophobe, “uncompassionate” and other names regardless of their argument.

V. Dishonor United States sovereignty, laws, citizenship, culture, and the effort of legal immigrants to become citizens by legalizing illegals.

VI. Thou shalt allow anyone to commit crime who happens to be an illegal, poor, minority, female, and has kids.

VII. Thou shalt ignore the drugs, weapons, criminals, diseases, and terrorists that enter this country because of illegal immigration.

VIII. Thou shalt ignore the fact that 2,158 Americans are killed every year by illegal aliens. More than by Iranian and Syrian backed terrorist in Iraq.

IX. Thou shalt only show “compassion” to Hispanics when it can be blamed upon the United States of America and ignore the suffering Hispanics in their Countries by negligent governments.

X. Thou shalt ignore the belief in Jesus Christ, The Ten Commandments, the un-born, government corruption, family values, and other Christian values to make your definition of “compassion” as the requirement for being a Christian.

City Churches Plan to Offer Sanctuary to Illegal Immigrants

(I don't know if any Arkansas organizations are taking part in this attempt to defend illegal immigration with the left's version Christianity)

http://www.cnsnews.com/ViewNation.asp?Page=/Nation/archive/200703/NAT20070313a.html

By Nathan Burchfiel CNSNews.com
Staff WriterMarch 13, 2007(CNSNews.com) -
Churches in major cities across the country are preparing to grant "sanctuary" to illegal immigrants facing deportation in an effort to unite evangelicals behind comprehensive immigration reform, according to a pastor organizing the effort.Rev. Alexia Salvatierra, executive director of Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice (CLUE), said Monday that Christians will fight to prevent families from being divided when illegal immigrant parents are deported, leaving behind children who are legal residents."There are congregations all across this country that see this as a moral issue," Salvatierra said during a discussion on immigration at the Center for American Progress in Washington, D.C. She said the religious community has "a tradition of being the voice for those who have no voice.
"Salvatierra, an ordained Lutheran minister, said the program will begin in Los Angeles, where CLUE is based, and spread to other major cities. Each participating congregation will care for one family with citizen children whose parents face deportation. She said each participating church would adopt a "decent, law-abiding family."Salvatierra did not reveal further details of the project, but suggested that it could violate prohibitions on giving aid to illegal immigrants. "There are traditions," she said, "of moments when it is God's call to break the law."Rev. Jim Wallis, founder of Sojourners Call to Renewal, said there are some laws "that are just bad laws, immoral laws," and he called upon Christians to lobby for "compassionate" comprehensive immigration reform that treats illegal immigrants with grace."The alien who resides with you shall be to you as the citizen among you," Wallis said, quoting the biblical passage of Leviticus 19:34.
Several passages in the book of Leviticus outline rules applying to Israelites and the "aliens" living among them. The passages require that the aliens abide by the same standards as the Israelites."The way the system is operating is driving people to do bad things," Wallis said, telling Cybercast News Service that fixing the "broken" immigration system, including increasing border security, is a bigger concern than punishing undocumented residents for breaking the law.Wallis said immigration reform is one of the "great moral issues" facing the nation and criticized conservative Christian leaders like Focus on the Family President James Dobson for focusing on traditional values issues like abortion and homosexuality and not addressing other issues such as immigration and poverty.
In August 2006, as immigration bills were hotly debated in the U.S. Congress and in massive protests around the country, a Chicago area church became a focus of attention when it gave "sanctuary" to an illegal immigrant.Elvira Arellano, an illegal immigrant whose son is a U.S. citizen, sought refuge at Adalberto Memorial United Methodist Church in Chicago in a bid to avoid deportation for working with a fake Social Security number. Officials have yet to act on their threat to arrest her inside the church.
Tom McClusky, vice president of government affairs for the conservative Family Research Council (FRC), told Cybercast News Service that his organization doesn't have a firm policy on how to deal with the illegal immigrants residing in the United States."We certainly think something needs to be done about enforcing the borders before you can even address the 11 million or so who are here," he said, adding that immigration is "definitely not one of our core issues."Responding to Wallis' criticism that faith-based organizations like FRC don't address immigration, McClusky said Wallis "might confuse what the role of the federal government is and what the role of the individual is."He said that FRC doesn't believe the government should dictate how Christians respond to illegal immigrants and that the organization believes churches should be allowed to offer charity to illegal immigrants without facing punishment. "It's not their job to look for green cards," McClusky said of charities.Carrie Gordon Earle, a spokesperson for Focus on the Family, told Cybercast News Service that the organization doesn't focus on immigration issues because its board of directors, which sets the group's agenda, has "not directed us to expand into the area of immigration.""It's an issue that demands both justice and compassion," she said, adding that 'we care about all families, whether they have entered the country legally or illegally."
