Death by illegals

San Francisco's political establishment has long prided itself on providing a haven for illegal immigrants. Mayor Gavin Newsom even launched a taxpayer-funded $83,000 "public awareness campaign" earlier this year assuring illegal immigrants that the "sanctuary city" by the bay was in their court. And indeed it is. Under the city's 1989 voter-approved sanctuary ordinance, police officers and other city employees are prohibited from inquiring into immigration status. In addition, the city will not direct municipal funds or employees towards assisting federal immigration enforcement, unless such assistance is required by federal or state law or a warrant. No doubt such protections warm the heart of the city's liberal leadership. But San Francisco's status as a sanctuary city is having unintended consequences. The brutal and senseless murder last month of Tony Bologna and his sons Michael, 20, and Matthew, 16, at the hands of Edwin Ramos, a native of El Salvador and known member of the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) street gang, was a reminder that inviting illegal activity can turn deadly. The Bolognas were on their way back from a family picnic when they inadvertently blocked Ramos' car from making a left turn in the Excelsior district. When Bologna politely backed up to let the other car past, Ramos responded by opening fire and killing all three passengers. Ramos has been charged with three counts of murder, with the added penalty of street-gang involvement.

So far, much of the outcry surrounding the case has centered on San Francisco district attorney Kamala Harris' policy of not seeking the death penalty, in this case, against the wishes of widow, Danielle Bologna. But in the process, Ramos' immigration status has largely been overlooked. Ramos' original lawyer, Joseph O'Sullivan, claimed that his client was in the country legally and applying for permanent residence, but federal immigration authorities insist otherwise and promise to deport Ramos if he is convicted. O'Sullivan has since asked to be removed from the case, claiming a connection via a previous client. Thus, he has never had to explain his assertions regarding Ramos' immigration status. This certainly wasn't Ramos' first brush with the law. He was booked both on felony weapons charges and for being a member of a criminal street gang earlier this year, but escaped prosecution for lack of evidence. However, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Francisco Police Department "cited 'numerous documented contacts' that officers had with Ramos and [his companion] Lopez, and said both were active members of the MS-13 street gang.'" But thanks to San Francisco's sanctuary city status, instead of being reported to federal immigration authorities and deported, Ramos was allowed continue to roam the streets of San Francisco until his arrest for the Bologna killings. San Francisco's sanctuary policy has also taken a statewide toll. While adult illegal immigrant felons are not protected by the ordinance, no such stipulation exists for juvenile offenders, and city officials have used that loophole to dump the problem onto other counties. Earlier this month, San Bernardino County officials threatened to sue the city of San Francisco for sending a group of Honduran, illegal immigrant, juvenile crack dealers to group homes in the city of Yucaipa without notification. Eight of them simply walked away from the unsecured group homes and only one has been recaptured. Officials later acknowledged that this wasn't the first time San Francisco had unloaded criminal illegal immigrants onto San Bernardino County. In fact, Yucaipa has seen a rise in violent crime in accordance with the influx of foreign offenders to its group homes in recent years. This time around, the outcry from San Bernardino officials caused Mayor Newsom to alter the city's approach to juvenile offenders. No doubt, Newsom's interest in running for governor of California, which he announced just before the controversy erupted, influenced his decision. While Newsom may find a sympathetic audience in San Francisco to his former commitment to sanctuary protections for illegal immigrants, it could prove a liability on the statewide level. Even on a local level, there's some indication that people are getting fed up with the city's insistence on emphasizing ideology over public safety. In a local CBS poll, 79 percent of respondents agreed that San Francisco should "turn over convicted illegal immigrants for deportation." Monetary concerns are another factor. It doesn't help that Mayor Newsom and other officials bemoan the city's $338 million budget deficit, even as funds continue to pour into sustaining San Francisco's sanctuary city policies. San Francisco has spent millions of dollars housing juvenile, illegal immigrant offenders and hundreds of thousands of dollars flying them back to their countries of origin in recent years, instead of turning them over to federal immigration authorities as federal law requires. In the wake of the furor over the Honduran case and federal authorities' demand that San Francisco end the flights, the city started housing some of the dealers in youth rehabilitation centers, costing taxpayers $7,000 per month, per person.

Then there's San Francisco Supervisor and State Assembly candidate Tom Ammiano's brilliant plan to provide municipal identification cards to those who either cannot or will not obtain a state-issued driver's license – or in other words, illegal immigrants. Set to go into effect next month, the ID program could cost up to $2.86 million in the first three years, according to a County Clerk estimate. As it turns out, Newsom's aforementioned $83,000 taxpayer-funded love letter to illegal immigrants was just the icing on the cake. Supporters of San Francisco's sanctuary city policies, which include members of the local faith community who inspired the original ordinance, argue that the current approach is the only humane solution. In its 2007 pledge, the New Sanctuary Movement, describing immigration raids, stated that "We cannot in good conscience ignore such suffering and injustice." But where is the compassion for the injustice inflicted upon American citizens? Others argue that juvenile illegal immigrants deserve special treatment because they are minors. But this ignores the fact that criminal illegal immigrants and the drug cartels for whom some of them work, are aware of San Francisco's former sanctuary loophole and have taken to falsely claiming juvenile status as a result. Still, others argue that police departments need to work with illegal immigrants in the community in order to effectively tackle crime and that fears of deportation get in the way. But extending the current, chaotic state of affairs will only lead to further crime and misery, even for those within such communities. While San Francisco's sanctuary city ordinance may have been well-intentioned, it has resulted in an untenable and anarchic situation that is taking its toll on city residents and surrounding counties alike. Providing sanctuary for law-breakers at the expense of law-abiding citizens is neither a compassionate nor a moral approach. The issue is not one of callousness towards illegal immigrants, but rather, the duty owed American citizens by their government. In some respects, every layer of the government has failed this test, but in this case, it's the local government that is absconding on its duties. And all San Francisco officials can seem to offer up is more of the same.

A 41-hour manhunt ended Friday with the arrest of a man suspected of gunning down his cousin’s wife in her east Rogers home. Sergio Morales-Carrera, 23, was arrested in a vehicle in Fayetteville about 2: 10 p. m. by members of the Rogers Police Department’s criminal investigation division, said Lt. Mike Johnson, department spokesman. Morales-Carrera was arrested “without incident,” Johnson said. He was taken to the Rogers jail and later to the Benton County jail, Johnson said. A bond hearing is scheduled for 9 a. m. Monday, he said.
Two other men also were arrested on charges of hindering apprehension: Ramiro Ortiz-Hinojo, 27, and Miguel Ortiz-Hinojo, 25.
All three are suspected of being illegal aliens and will be processed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to a news release. Veronica Robles, a 37-yearold mother of five, was shot about 9 p. m. Wednesday. Robles’ husband, Jose Carrera, is Morales-Carrera’s cousin. Investigators followed leads to find Morales-Carrera and another person in a vehicle at 3110 Ika Lane in Fayetteville, Johnson said. He didn’t say if that person was one of the men arrested for hindering apprehension. A handgun was found, but Johnson didn’t have information on the weapon. It will be sent to the state Crime Laboratory in Little Rock, he said. Police had warned the public Thursday that Morales-Carrera was considered armed and dangerous because he was believed to have fled the scene of the shooting with a. 45-caliber handgun. Police responded to a 911 call from Robles’ 15-year-old daughter from 2606 Graham Drive. “The daughter collapsed in the front yard, and the children were screaming, ‘ He killed our mother ! Stop him !’” according to a neighbor. The neighbor said Thursday that she saw Morales-Carrera arrive at the home in a pickup and heard an argument inside. She watched as Morales-Carrera retrieved a gun from the pickup. She heard three shots and saw Morales-Carrera leave the house and drive away. The truck was found Thursday morning at Tesoro Beach restaurant at 701 S. Thompson St. in Springdale.
Rogers police Capt. Ron Largent said Friday that investigators are working to determine where Morales-Carrera went between the restaurant and his arrest. Largent said that within hours of the 911 call, agencies in nine states had been notified to keep an eye out for Morales-Carrera. Rogers detectives also teamed with other agencies including Fayetteville police, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the U. S. Marshals Service. Largent, speaking before Morales-Carrera’s arrest, said making an arrest is difficult if the suspect isn’t caught in the first 48 hours after a crime. “But we might have the guy caught in an hour,” he said. About two hours after Largent spoke, Morales-Carrera was in custody, about 41 hours after the shooting. The Marshals Service became involved Friday, said Dick O’Connell, marshal for the Western District of Arkansas. O’Connell said enforcement agencies at the U. S.-Mexico and U. S.-Canada borders were on alert. Last year, the Marshals Service helped track a fugitive from Washington County to Honduras, said Sgt. Oscar Henson of the Washington County sheriff’s office. Jerry D. Sykes was arrested in September in Honduras after six months on the lam. Sykes awaits trial in the March 2007 suffocation death of his girlfriend, Sandra Stokes. “If it wasn’t for [the U. S. marshals ], we probably wouldn’t have got him back,” Henson said.

A company that owns 11 McDonald's restaurants in Nevada was fined one million dollars Wednesday after pleading guilty to employing 58 illegal immigrants. The company, Mack Associates Inc., knew the employees were illegal immigrants and had offered them names and social security numbers belonging to other people, the US Justice Department said. The company pleaded guilty in federal court in Las Vegas to conspiracy to encourage and induce an alien's unlawful residence in the United States and aiding and abetting an alien to remain in the country, the department said. The company's director of operations also pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting an alien to remain in the country. And the former vice president of Mack Associates pleaded guilty to inducing an illegal alien to remain in the United States and faces a possible sentence of up to five years in prison and a 250,000 dollar fine. About 30 of the illegal workers have returned to their native countries while the rest were allowed to stay in the United States until the case closes.

On first violation, the company's license would be suspended until the illegal worker or workers are terminated. On second and subsequent violations, the suspension is for one year. .. 'The public is outraged,' said Sen. Tim Burchett, R-Knoxville, who teamed with Turner in successfully sponsoring a bill that imposes penalties on those who transport illegal immigrants in Tennessee. Violators will face a fine of $1,000 for each person transported."

Missouri: JEFFERSON CITY, MO (2008-07-07) Governor Matt Blunt is traveling across Missouri Monday and Tuesday to hold ceremonial bill signings for the state's new wide-ranging illegal immigration law. It includes provisions that require immigrants applying for public assistance to prove they're in the country legally and penalizes cities that enact sanctuary policies. A couple of non-profit groups that work with immigrants told WLOX News that some families have been leaving the area because they can't find jobs or are afraid of the new penalties... It is interesting how often we have heard the statement that there is no way to deport all these illegal immigrants. It is obvious now, as many have maintained - they won't have to be deported if our officials will just make and enforce the right laws. They will leave on their own accord! First they will go to states like ours who have no laws. Arkansas is already number one in the increase of Hispanics. It is way past time for Arkansas legislators to act.

LITTLE ROCK - Supporters of a proposed initiated act to largely ban illegal immigrants from receiving public benefits acknowledged Monday they were thousands of signatures short of qualifying the measure for the November ballot. Monday was the deadline for submitting signatures on behalf of ballot initiatives to the secretary of state's office, and the leader of the group Secure Arkansas said supporters were about 5,000 signatures short of the 61,974-signature threshold for making the Nov. 4 general election ballot. Secure Arkansas chairman Jeannie Burlsworth said she was disappointed but that the canvassing effort had strengthen her group. It's goal now, she said, is to push for passage of legislation similar to the proposed initiated act during the 2009 regular legislative session. "We knew it was a long shot," Burlsworth said. "We're not going away." Also Monday, the Family Council Action Committee submitted 65,899 signatures in support of a proposed initiated act that would ban unmarried couples from adopting children or serving as foster parents in the state. Supporters of a proposed constitutional amendment to lengthen county sheriffs' terms from two years to four years notified the secretary of state's office they did not have enough signatures to turn in. If the petitions that were submitted by Monday's 4:30 p.m. deadline fall short of the required number of valid signatures, supporters will have another 30 days to gather signatures.

Last month, Lt. Gov. Bill Halter submitted 138,000 signatures - well above the 77,468 necessary - in support of his proposed constitutional amendment to create a state lottery to fund college scholarships. The process of verifying those signatures began Monday morning, said Natasha Naragon, spokeswoman for Secretary of State Charlie Daniels. At an afternoon news conference, Burlsworth said Secure Arkansas was buoyed by having gathered 56,122 signatures in less than two months and that registered voters in each of the state's 75 counties signed the petition. Despite falling short, Burlsworth said she was pleased with the effort because more than 4 percent of the registered voters in 26 counties signed the petition. State law requires 4 percent of signatures in at least 15 counties across the state. She said public forums with lawmakers and citizens will be held over the next six months in each of the state's 75 counties in advance of the regular session, which convenes in January. "We're excited about the future," Burlsworth said. "We're going to look at how each county has been affected by the illegal alien crisis." Espi Porter of Hot Springs Village, who immigrated to the United States from Cuba 50 years ago and became a U.S. citizen in 1963, said he supported Secure Arkansas' proposal. "It is not racist," Porter said. "I, along with my family, did the legal route and it's not fair to us that people just jump in here and get everything without working for it." Gov. Mike Beebe came out against the proposal, saying it would duplicate provisions already covered by federal and state law. The proposal would create a larger bureaucracy and cost the state additional money, the governor said.

Earlier Monday, the Family Council Action Committee announced it had turned in 65,899 signatures in support of its measure to bar unmarried couples from adopting children or serving as foster parents in Arkansas. Family Council director Jerry Cox said he expects about 25 percent of the signatures to be determined invalid and that the group would take advantage of the 30-day extension to gather enough signatures to make up the difference, which he expected to be as much as 15,000. When the petition drive began last year, Cox said he hoped the effort would produce 100,000 signatures, a number the group secured four years ago for a measure to ban gay marriage in Arkansas. Voters in 2004 overwhelmingly passed a constitutional amendment that defines marriage as only between a man and a woman.The 65,000 signatures for the adoption measure fell well short of the goal. "People simply have not been paying attention to this issue and that's been the greatest difficulty," Cox said at a news conference. "It's not a lack of support as much as it is a lack of attention to the issue." Jennifer Ferguson, a spokesman for Arkansas Families First, a group formed earlier this year to oppose the measure, said the proposal goes too far. She said the state already has a policy banning couples living together from serving as foster parents, but there is no such policy for adoptions. "We think the current policy that is in place, where you've got qualified people like juvenile judges making decisions about what is best for children and where they should be placed is the best way to go," Ferguson said.

I am all for legal immigrants being afforded the same privileges that all us natural-born folks get. However, I strongly resist giving them to every person who sneaks over here and drains the resources our tax dollars pay for our own legal folks who are poor and need care. I saw firsthand as a teacher in Dallas, Texas, for over 30 years the financial havoc the illegal community caused the county and the huge burden it put on the school systems in the area. The illegal children in my school would disappear for days and weeks because their parents would take them back to Mexico to visit relatives. Most of these non-English-speaking parents had no clue about the responsibility they owed their children to see that they were in class to learn. Many rented apartments, never paid the rent, then sneaked out before they were evicted, just to turn up at another unsuspecting apartment manager's complex to continue that same cycle of nonpayment.
One of my students was gang-raped by the four illegal men living next door to her apartment. That precious 11-yearold contracted venereal disease as a result. Another was sexually abused by her Mexican uncle. My brother-in-law was hit by an illegal driving an uninsured car. He lost his leg. The federal government does not seem interested in these issues.
